BEGINNING OF THE SCORE (pdf)

Eole Quintet (Martine Grandjean, flute ; Valentin
Bassenne, oboe ;
Sarah
Chardonnens, clarinet ; Julien Baud, horn ; Nicolas Michel, bassoon)
This
work has been ordered by the Eole Quintet, which gave its first performance on
September 11th, 2001,
at
the Espace Jean-Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle of Fribourg.
(the
recording of this work is taken from the website of the Eole Quintet)
Duration of the work : approximately 16 minutes
Commentary of the work by the composer :
One of the great problematics of the musical
composition it that of unity in diversity, the balance being reached when there
is no place, neither for bore, nor for scattering. The more or less structured
forms (sonata, rondo, fugue,…) used to possess the potentialities of such a
balance, as much as did tonal harmony. The progressively acquired liberty in
the domains of form, harmonic, melodic and rhythmical materials, offers as much
new possibilities of balance then of unsteadiness. Thus the requirement of a
quest renewed again and again, which has to be lived rather than pondered over
: music prevails over theory.
In my Wind Quintet, diversity is assured by a
variation of climates and of sonorities, and unity is assured by the permanence
of some melodic or rhythmical fragments, and by the varied recalls of already
heard passages.
Established since a bit more than 2 centuries,
the traditional formation of the Wind Quintet puts once again the question of
diversity and unity in the centre, by the use of instruments with completely
different timbres, but where the different possibilities of mixing can allow a
sonorous melting, ceaselessly changing.
